Although there are many theories about its origin, it is believed that the drink was created in the 1930s at New York’sBrass Railin the Waldorf.

Interestingly, Bronx was the first remembered drink of Bill W, the founder ofAlcoholics Anonymous, who said that it was the beginning of his descent into alcoholism, so take it easy with this one, just in case.

The Mudslide cocktail is a dessert cocktail made with Kahlua and Irish cream that’s a variation on theWhite Russian. It was invented in the mid-1970’s on Grand Cayman Island at a bar called Wreck Bar. The story goes that a customer ordered a White Russian, but the bar didn’t have heavy cream. They did happen to be stocked with Irish cream, so they used that instead and the Mudslide was born!

This drink later evolved to be blended with ice cream and became popular at chain restaurants, where it’s more like a boozy milkshake!!. This style of the cocktail is referred to as a “frozen Mudslide.”

The Espresso Martini is a vodka martini mixed with coffee, invented in 1983. A bartender at the Soho Brasserie in London named Dick Bradsell created the drink for a patron who asked for a drink to wake her up. (There was more to that quote…here’s the full story.) Apparently the coffee machine was right next to the drink station, and the Espresso Martini was born. The name came later, in the 1990’s when flavored martinis were all the rage.

There are lots of variations on exactly how to make this coffee martini. The original version had two types of coffee liqueur and simple syrup. Today it varies based on on the bartender.

The Bushwacker is as frozen alcoholic drink made with Kahlua, rum, creme de cacao, and cream of coconut. It was invented in 1975 in St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, and has since become very popular especially in Florida and beach resorts. How did it get its name? The story goes that bartender Angie Conigliaro and restaurant manager Tom Brokamp named it after a guest’s dog, an Afghan hound named Bushwack!

You may know it’s more popular cousin the White Russian, a variation that adds a swirl of cream.

The Colorado Bulldog is a cocktail made with vodka, coffee liqueur, cream and cola: it’s a variation on the White Russian. The story of the drink is unknown, but it’s possible that it became popular in the 1980’s with a related cocktail, the Mind Eraser.

The Colorado Bulldog is a variation on both the White Russian and the Black Russian. The Black Russian was invented in 1949, apparently for the American ambassador to Luxembourg in a hotel bar in Brussels. Adding cream to make it a White Russian started in 1955, and it was an instant hit. The Colorado Bulldog drink just adds a splash of cola!
